Birth Of A Dream
MRS. LUCY OGBU ANI [nee aka] Lucy Aka (1938 - 2011)
Mrs. Lucy Ogbu Ani [nee aka] popularly known in Aku as Lucy Aka was born in 1938 in Aku to Mr. and Mrs. Thadieus and Veronica Aka from Lelegu clan. She was their first daughter in a family of 4; 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Her parents, my grandparents were very rich in farming. My grandfather had herds of cattle and that made him a Nobel man in Aku. In Aku in those days rich parents hardly sent their children to school because to them, that was a waste of time. Instead, they would engage them in the family farming business and that was exactly what my grandfather did with my mom.
That is how she ended up not going to school which haunted her to the day she passed in 2011, at the age of 73. Before her passing, she ensured that she made a big impact in our community by training a bunch of people. My mother joined her mom in her trading business in the seventies after the civil war. After a little while, she branched out and traveled to Lagos for greener pastures and in 1975 my mom was able to start a building contracting business.
She started supplying Julius Berger sand and gravel and she became very rich overnight. She then branched out and started transportation business with fleet of lorries carrying books from apex mill in Iganmu, Lagos to all the then 16 states of Nigeria.
She moved me and my sisters to Lagos and sent my elder brother out to the US for education. She vowed to help humanity, and she did just that by giving bunch of scholarships and some people she trained in trades. She was a member of the prestigious people’s club of Nigeria with the likes of Ume Ezeoke and the rest. She died in the USA in 2011, but before she died, she told me not to let her name be forgotten in a hurry. So, I’m trying to keep her legacy alive. Attached is her picture. Mama, keep resting in peace Amen.
